How to Choose a Healthcare Sharing Program: What to Compare Before You Join

‍

Healthcare sharing is an alternative to health insurance that lowers costs while maintaining access to quality care. Members make a monthly contribution that is used to share one another's eligible medical bills. To choose the right healthcare sharing program for you, compare total yearly cost, how bills are paid, the provider network, member support, what’s eligible for sharing, and what isn’t shared.

‍

Healthcare sharing is gaining interest as a lower-cost alternative to health insurance as traditional coverage costs continue to rise. KFF's 2026 Employer Health Benefits Survey found that average employer-sponsored family premiums rose 5% in 2026 to $28,303 a year. On the ACA Marketplace, the average monthly premium people paid after tax credits rose 58%, from $113 to $178, after enhanced subsidies expired, according to a 2026 article on ACA marketplace enrollment, premiums, and deductibles from KFF.

‍

Another article from KFF published in 2025 found employer plans remain the most common source of coverage, covering nearly half of U.S. residents. Healthcare sharing is a growing alternative: As of 2023, more than 1.7 million Americans were estimated to belong to a healthcare sharing program, according to Business Insurance, citing the Colorado Division of Insurance.

‍

"People shouldn't have to make an impossible choice between affording their house payment and having healthcare," said Christopher Jin, founder and CEO of WeShare Health, a nonprofit healthcare sharing ministry (HCSM). "We want people to know that healthcare sharing is a real option available to avoid rising healthcare costs without sacrificing accessibility to high-quality care."

Which healthcare sharing ministry gives me the most options with the lowest out-of-pocket cost?

Programs with similar monthly prices can feel very different once you need care. Here is how WeShare Health compares with other major healthcare sharing ministries across key areas:

‍

Question to ask WeShare Health Other healthcare sharing ministries
What is my minimum out-of-pocket before sharing begins? $0 Annual Member Care Share available on WeShare Health Premier. Lowest options typically start around $500 to $1,250, and some start at $3,000 or more.
Do you bill providers directly or reimburse me? Direct billing, plus WeShare Health's Member Care negotiates when a provider overcharges. You see a bill only after sharing is applied. Several have you submit bills and wait to be repaid. One program reports most bills take 60 to 75 days to be reimbursed.
Is preventive care shared? 100% shared on every program, including annual physicals and wellness exams. Often not shared, or shared only on certain tiers or with add-ons.
Is mental health care shared? Counseling and psychiatric visits shared on every WeShare Health program through Amwell or BetterHelp. $0 virtual counseling, plus in-person sessions at a low consultation fee. Often limited to telehealth or excluded.
How are pre-existing conditions handled? WeShare Health Premier shares with no waiting period. WeShare Health Essential and Enhanced plans begin sharing in year one. Commonly a multi-year wait (up to 36 months at the largest program) or a requirement to be symptom-free for 1-5 years, depending on the condition.
Is maternity shared? Shared after Annual Member Care Share (AMCS) is met with applicable programs. Often a waiting period, a separate cost, or a dollar cap.
Are prescription drugs shared? Shared up to $3,500 a year, plus CVS Caremark and Optum Perks pricing. Usually discount cards only; ongoing medications are often not shared.
Can I keep my doctor? WeShare Health uses the PHCS PPO network of more than 1 million providers, and the Member Care team checks on in-network providers for you. Network size varies by program.
What isn't shared? Transparent and published in program guidelines. A U.S.-based Member Care team can answer any specific questions. Varies by program; review each program's published guidelines.
Comparison based on the published guidelines of other major healthcare sharing programs as of October 2026. Terms vary by program and change over time, so review each program's current guidelines before you join.

Every healthcare sharing program has guidelines, and transparent organizations publish them clearly. Before joining any program, read its member guidelines in full. Each WeShare Health sharing program has certain requirements for sharing, and injuries from high-risk activities or substance use are not shared in any program.

Who can join a Christian healthcare sharing program like WeShare Health?

Healthcare sharing ministries typically ask members to share common values and commit to healthy living to keep costs low for everyone. WeShare Health is a faith-based healthcare sharing community open to Christians of any denomination. During enrollment, members agree to a Statement of Shared Beliefs and commit to healthy choices for their physical and mental health.

Which healthcare sharing ministry costs the least per month?

Most healthcare sharing programs have three main costs under different names, and they differ most in how low the yearly commitment can go.

‍

  1. Monthly contribution: the amount you pay each month to stay a member. WeShare Health sets monthly contributions based on factors such as location and number of dependents, and the Cost Savings Calculator estimates your monthly contribution. WeShare Health reports that members pay 30% to 60% less than comparable traditional insurance and that monthly contribution rates have not increased in over four years as of this publication.

  1. Annual Member Care Share (AMCS): the amount you pay toward eligible bills each year before sharing begins, similar to a deductible. Members choose their AMCS level, and the Premier program offers a $0 AMCS, an uncommon option for both traditional insurance and HCSMs.

‍

  1. Consultation fees: a set fee per visit, similar to a copay. Consultation fees are based on the type of care you’re receiving. For example, a specialist will usually have a slightly higher consultation fee than an urgent care visit.

What happens when I get a healthcare sharing bill?

Healthcare sharing programs handle bills in one of two ways: reimbursement or direct billing. With reimbursement, you pay the provider first, submit the bill, and wait for the program to share the cost. With direct billing, the provider bills the healthcare sharing program, not you. You show a member ID at the provider’s office, pay any applicable consultation fee, and then the HCSM works with the provider before sending you the exact out-of-pocket amount.

WeShare Health works with providers directly instead of reimbursing members. By leveraging a well-known PPO network, PHCS, and a partnership with CVS Caremark, WeShare Health can offer members bills at the rates they’d expect with traditional insurance. In the event a provider overcharges, WeShare Health negotiates on members' behalf.

Does healthcare sharing include more than just catastrophic care?

Healthcare sharing programs differ in how much they invest in keeping members healthy, not just in sharing bills after an illness. Every WeShare Health program shares 100% of preventive care, including annual physicals and wellness exams. Access to leading wellness brands like Noom, BetterHelp, HelloFresh, and Fitbod is also included with each sharing program.

The WeShare Health Premier program adds benefits that are rare among other healthcare sharing programs: income-loss sharing during a critical illness, funeral and memorial expense assistance, and no waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.

Can I keep my doctor with healthcare sharing?

Most people can keep their doctor if the healthcare sharing program uses a large national network. All WeShare Health programs use the PHCS PPO network, which includes more than 1 million providers and is also offered by many traditional insurance companies. For prescriptions and walk-in care, WeShare Health partners with CVS Caremark and MinuteClinic, though members can use any in-network option.

Is mental health care shared?

Mental health cost sharing is one of the biggest differences between healthcare sharing programs, and some programs limit or exclude it. All WeShare Health members can access counseling through BetterHelp or Amwell, as well as psychiatric visits through Amwell, to support mental health.

Frequently asked questions

How is healthcare sharing different from health insurance?

Health insurance is a regulated contract where you pay a premium, and the insurer is legally obligated to pay covered claims. Healthcare sharing works differently. Members contribute a set amount each month, and the organization reviews eligible needs against its guidelines and shares costs across the membership. That structure keeps contributions lower than comparable coverage. While sharing is voluntary and not contractually guaranteed, credible organizations like WeShare Health clearly outline membership guidelines and publish monthly sharing summaries for their communities.

What happens when a WeShare Health member needs medical care?

A WeShare Health member shows their member ID at an in-network provider and pays any applicable consultation fee. The provider sends the bill to WeShare Health, which reviews it for eligibility. Eligible costs above the member's Annual Member Care Share (AMCS) are shared by the community.

What makes WeShare Health different from other healthcare sharing programs?

WeShare Health bills providers directly instead of reimbursing members, negotiates with providers on members' behalf, and shares 100% of preventive care. WeShare Health also offers a $0 Annual Member Care Share (AMCS) option on Premier, access to wellness programs, mental health support on every program, and access to the PHCS PPO network of more than 1 million providers.

What’s the signup process for a healthcare sharing ministry, and how quickly does membership start?

Enrollment in WeShare Health is open year-round, with no open enrollment window. That flexibility means you can join when you want or need to, such as after a job change, a move, or a missed ACA deadline, instead of waiting months for the next enrollment period. The online application walks through program options, Annual Member Care Share (AMCS) selection, and membership guidelines. Members can choose a start date of the 1st or 15th of the month.

WeShare Health is not insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed. Membership is subject to the WeShare Health membership guidelines.
