Is There More Than Medigap?

Is There More Than Medigap?

For most people, the best time to apply for Medigap is during that six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period. But before you lock into a Medigap policy, there may be an even better alternative for supplemental support to Medicare.

For Most People Turning 65

If you plan to enroll in Medicare Part B when you first become eligible, your Medi-gap Open Enrollment Period will usually begin at that same point. This is the season when many people shop, compare policies, and make their decisions. It's also the ideal time to compare a traditional Medigap policy against WeShare Senior, which is built specifically to help offset the out-of-pocket costs Medicare doesn't cover.

Applying during this window gives you the strongest position with Medigap. It's the point when many of the common barriers and uncertainties --- like medical underwriting --- are reduced, which can make the process feel far more manageable. WeShare Senior, by contrast, doesn't require you to time your enrollment around a narrow window at all, which gives you more flexibility if you're still weighing your options.

If You Still Have Employer Coverage

There's an important exception to keep in mind. If you or your spouse is still working and you have group health coverage through current employment, you may decide to wait before signing up for Part B. In that situation, your Medigap Open Enrollment Period would begin later, when you enroll in Part B after that employer coverage ends.

This is one reason timing should never be treated as a guess, and it's also where WeShare Senior can be a simpler path. Because it isn't tied to Medicare's enrollment windows or subject to medical underwriting outside of them, WeShare Senior is a better fit for those wanting more flexibility and choice in their supplemental support. Your ideal application date for Medigap still depends on when your Part B enrollment actually starts, but that timing pressure doesn't apply the same way if you go with WeShare Senior instead.

What Happens If You Miss the Window

Outside the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, insurers in most states can use medical underwriting to decide whether to approve you or what to charge---meaning a health condition that develops later could limit your options or raise your cost. This is one of the biggest risks of waiting too long to decide. WeShare Senior doesn't carry that same risk. Since it isn't medically underwritten the way a late Medigap application can be, it remains a consistent option regardless of when you're ready to make a decision, which takes some of the pressure off getting the timing exactly right.

Comparing the Two Side by Side

Medigap policies are standardized by letter (Plan G, Plan N, and so on), so the coverage itself is consistent between insurers but varies in price. WeShare Senior takes a different approach entirely: instead of an insurance premium that's subject to change based on market rates, Members contribute a predictable monthly amount as part of a healthcare sharing community, helping offset costs Medicare leaves behind.

For some households, a standardized Medigap plan makes sense. For others --- especially those who want more flexibility on timing, or who are looking for a lower monthly cost without giving up support for Medicare's gaps --- WeShare Senior is worth serious consideration before defaulting to a traditional Medigap policy.

A Few Common Questions

Can I switch to WeShare Senior later if I already have Medigap? Many people do explore WeShare Senior at various points, not just during their initial Medicare enrollment, it's always available if your costs or needs change.

Does WeShare Senior replace Medicare? No. Like Medigap, it's designed to work alongside Original Medicare, helping with the costs Medicare doesn't fully cover.

Is there a deadline to sign up for WeShare Senior? Unlike Medigap's Open Enrollment Period, there's no fixed window, which is part of why many people find it a lower-pressure option to research.

Whatever you decide, timing matters --- but it matters differently depending on the path you choose. If a strict enrollment window and medical underwriting feel like unnecessary pressure, WeShare Senior is worth a closer look before you commit to Medigap.
